Health is a central input into human capital as well as a key output of economic well-being. To showcase research on racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes and health care, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), with support from the National Institute on Aging, will convene a research conference in Cambridge, MA, on Friday, May 17, 2024. The program will be organized by NBER researchers Jevay Grooms (Howard University) and Hannes Schwandt (Northwestern University).
The conference will highlight research on a range of issues related to health disparities, including long-term trends in disparities and the sources of these disparities, measurement of disparities at different stages of the lifecycle, racial and ethnic discrimination in health care delivery, disparities in public and private insurance access, and the impact of public policies more broadly in contributing to or reducing disparities. It will feature a keynote address by Raj Chetty (Harvard University and NBER), as well as a tribute to the late labor economist and NBER board member William Spriggs.
The conference organizers will consider submissions of long abstracts as well as complete papers, with a preference for papers. They welcome submissions from scholars who are early in their careers, who are not NBER affiliates, and who are members of historically under-represented groups.
To be considered for inclusion on the program, upload papers or abstracts by 11:59pm EST on Thursday, February 15, 2024.
Please do not submit papers that have been accepted for publication. Authors chosen to present papers will be notified in late February. The NBER will cover economy class travel and hotel expenses for up to two authors per paper and for discussants, subject to NBER travel regulations and federal grant requirements.
Please share this call with others who may be interested in submitting a paper. Questions about this conference may be addressed to confer@nber.org.
